S&A

Design Process

Website design is essentially a marriage of two fields - creative design, and the coding of HTML, graphics, and possibly Flash components, to present a usable website. Like real marriages, some work out, and some do not.

At S&A, we follow a clearly defined process to ensure a successful website design. First, we determine the goal of your site. Is it to be used for marketing your company and its products, or do you want to implement full ecommerce capabilities? This is perhaps the most important step in the process, as it guides the rest of the process, through to completion and launch.

Next, we like to get to know your company, its people, its existing marketing and collateral materials. Unless the site serves a very special purpose, there should be continuity between the look and feel of the website and that of other materials related to the company and its brand.

Once these steps are completed, we determine what the content needs are, and who will produce what, and by what date. Once we know the site's content needs, and considering the overall goal of the site, we sit down and map out the information architecture of the site. This encompasses the layout of the navigation, general hierarchy of the site, and how all the pieces of the site interrelate.

Once the architecture is set, we get to work on the "design" of the site - how the pages look, how the navigation behaves, etc. Once these designs and the overall information architecture are approved by the client, we start building the site, and work until it's finished and approved.

Once it's posted to the web, we then go about registering the site with the various search engines, and possibly professional organizations, that will help visitors find the site on the web.

Throughout this entire design process, we like to involve the client as much as possible - the process is very interactive. The client always has input into every aspect of the site design, and retains full editorial control over graphics and copy on the site.
